So we're stuck with 1/3 of the movie to watch through it 1/5 of the cast left. There's no time for there to be any tension. We go from no deaths to lone survivor in 0 time at all. Then, once that long, boring, pointless setup is done, the movie decides to kill off 80% of its cast in like 15 minutes.
Why the fuck would one of the crazy cannibals try to warn off the kids? None of the setup is good and the movie would honestly be better with 30 minutes chopped off and replaced with 5 minutes of the kids just driving up to the old house. In fact, the one thing that IS relevant, the gas station worker, is actively contradicted in the climax of the film. They interact with the weird younger brother, but even that 'curse' or whatever he puts on Franklin never comes up again, and they all seem to immediately forget about it. But basically nothing in the first 30-40 minutes is relevant. I get that movies need some time to set up their plot, fair enough.
The first half of the movie has literally nothing happen. But this movie is, genuinely, fucking terrible.
I decided to watch TCM with some friends and figured it would be a great movie night. I'm not a huge slasher guy, I prefer more mellow/slowburn horror a lot more, but I've still enjoyed some old slasher films like Phantasm. I just saw the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and saying I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
